Here is probably one of my favorite Halloween crafts for kids. It is absolutely swift and easy, can be accomplished with a crowd if needed, and also is an excellent way to practice cutting and fine motor skills with smaller kids. Older children can allow their creativity take over and make some really wacky Halloween spiders!
What you are going to need:
Black construction paper
Scissors
Glue or sticky-tape
Funny eyes (optional) or scraps of paper and pens
Instructions:
Cut out a rectangle of construction paper just about 3 inches by 3 1/2 inches. Fold the short edge over almost an inch to make a pleat, and unfold it up again.
Turn the paper so that the crease is horizontal, then cut the paper in seven organized lines up to the pleat to create the 8 spider's legs. When working with smaller children, draw in the lines for them so they can repeat cutting on. When working with older kids, demonstrate to them how to create the first cut in the middle, isolating the space beneath the crease into two halves. Next demonstrate to them how to divide each half again to create quarters, and then the quarters making eighths. There is no need be overly exact.
Now wrap the spider around the child's finger and attach using sticky-tape or glue. Detach the spider again and garnish - either with bits of paper or else with googly eyes. Put the spider back on the finger then curve the legs into shape or you could curl them around a pencil.
A few other options:
Dangle the spiders! Merely cut a length of black yarn (wool) and attach inside the top of the spider using a small bit of sticky-tape.
Make littler variations of these spiders to go on the ends of Halloween pencils.
Wrap small spiders on all sides of straws to brighten your Halloween table! Craft some larger spiders and then place them around the table as well.
Cut a small opening on both sides of the spider's head and include a name card to turn these spiders into eerie place markers!
When the body of the spider is made but before adorning, put a black pipe cleaner round the head of the spider to give a furry appearance. The extending tip of the pipe cleaner can be curled into a hook form, that will make the spider painless to suspend from shelving, doorways, and any number of spooky places! Stick funny eyes on the top of the pipe cleaner.
